Calling mod makers!! - Suitability of parts list for first VV box mod
Giving huge thanks to Garry and Mark on TYT along with those who have answered my plethora of questions in chat, I feel it's time to give making a basic VV box mod a bash!

I've put together a parts list. Could you please look it over and see if I've chosen the right parts. Also any advice and tips would be very welcome Smile

Once I get started, I'll take pictures along the way to show progress. Will be a few weeks though as some of the parts are coming on the slowboat:

LM2596S BOARD
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380747239288?s...1436.l2649

DISPLAY
Either of these (unsure as to which one is most suitable):
1) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360763789956?s...1436.l2649
or
2) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370866501692?s...1436.l2649

510 CONNECTOR
http://www.liberty-flights.co.uk/product.asp?id=36

BATTERY HOLDER (twin 18650)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plastic-Batter...19c9dda911

FIRING SWITCH
Ideally I'd like to the switch to light up when pressed.
Some LED switches on ebay have 3 legs, some 4 or 5. I don't really understand why though.
Would this do the job?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-4-Pin-SPST...4acb7d9d0f

Alternative non-led switch:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2pcs-BLUE-Mome...5aed2d9df7

POTENTIOMETER
(I'd like to control voltage from the outside of the case)
10k Mini Pot Linear - Maplin code JM71N:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/miniature-potentiometers-2203

DIAL FOR POT
Not sure if this is suitable for the Pot above:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5pcs-11mm-Top-...53f0d7c4d5

TOGGLE SWITCH FOR SWITCHING BETWEEN INPUT AND OUTPUT VOLTAGES
I've looked at rocker switches but I'm a but clueless about this one!!

CASE
Need help here please. Not sure what size/type or suitability of material.

ELECTRICAL WIRE
I already have this stuff from ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261125670124?v...1439.l2649

TOOLS I HAVE
Soldering iron, solder & desoldering braid
Rotary Tool
Drill
Hot glue gun + sticks
2 part epoxy
Wire stripper/cutter
3rd hand tool

RE: Calling mod makers!! - Suitability of parts list for first VV box mod
i can't see any real problems there all looks good both switches are fine although i can't see a size for the led one. both displays will be fine the second is easier to work with. as for the switch to change the display i'd recommend this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...0957232370 it has six legs so if you attach the display to the 2 center pins you can attach the output to 2 on one end and input to the other end. that seller is worth looking at for other parts too as they have great combined postage on everything they sell and they are in the uk so quick delivery (switches, pot, dial and possibly case)

for a case that's not so easy to answer for a first build i'd probably go with some kind of plastic case and not too small for your first go, less to go wrong with shorts etc and more room to work inside it helps. at a guess the absolute minimum you need is 100mm x 65mm x 25mm but preferably bigger and if you can a way of opening it without having to unscrew it constantly

RE: Calling mod makers!! - Suitability of parts list for first VV box mod
Thanks Mark. That's a great help Smile

I've revised the list and decided to buy everything from the UK. Although it will cost a bit more, I'll at least be able to play with the bits this side of Christmas!

Here are the parts that are different from the OP (everything apart from case and 510 connector):

LM2596S BOARD
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221307319695?s...1436.l2649

DISPLAY
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Red-LED-D...4acb149eeb

BATTERY HOLDER (twin 18650) (2 in series option)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18650-Battery-...4178d2bfd9

TOGGLE SWITCH FOR SWITCHING BETWEEN INPUT AND OUTPUT VOLTAGES
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300957232370?s...1436.l2649

POTENTIOMETER
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16mm-Potentiom...1c3665bdeb

DIAL FOR POT
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Soft-Touch-Pot...1c362bcb0c

FIRING SWITCH - The board is capable of 3A but I'm unsure as to whether the switch needs to be a certain amp rating.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Square-Momenta...1c36a1d947

If you could cast your eyes over that lot, I'd much appreciate it!

RE: Calling mod makers!! - Suitability of parts list for first VV box mod
everything on there is fine. the question of the switch rating is a complex one without a definite answer as it's listed as 1A @ 250V AC in the specs sheet it states 1.5A @ 250V AC and 3A @125V AC

This as you may see is an AC not DC rating and there is no way to accurately convert to a DC rating, but as a generally accepted rough guide the rating holds for 10% of the AC rating so at 12V DC this switch is rated at 3A.

so in theory this would mean 6A @ 6V DC. well within the 3A rating of the circuit with a large margin for error.

so after that large complex overly complicated answer...........yes it looks like your good to go lol

RE: Calling mod makers!! - Suitability of parts list for first VV box mod
Thanks Mark! I must admit I did find the switch ratings confusing so thanks also for confirming that they're suitable Smile

I'll start ordering the bits now so with any luck I can start thinking about how to put it all together.

I'll rewatch some episodes of TYT and then put all the bits on paper and draw a wiring diagram as Garry did recently.

Pics to follow!!

Disasters to follow pics! Big Grin

np Smile that was such an innocent looking question yet so hard to answer and one which has me scratching my head a lot of the time lol

i'm sure you will have fun making it and i look forward to seeing what you come up with!

I do hope so Mark Smile

I was also thinking about putting in a sliding on/off switch to switch the completed device on and off but I'm not sure whether that switch needs to be rated as it will most likely be used when the unit isn't firing.

Will something like this be up to the job?

RE: Calling mod makers!! - Suitability of parts list for first VV box mod
Also I had another thought. I wouldn't mind adding an orange LED to the circuit that lights up when I hit fire but if it's going to make my life difficult, I'll leave it out for this first build.

Here are the choices:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3mm-Cylindrica...43bf9548e3

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5mm-Cylindrica...46029de6fd

Would either of the above be suitable and if so, is it just a case of adding it in line with the circuit or would i need to add a resistor? If so, which type would I need to add?

RE: Calling mod makers!! - Suitability of parts list for first VV box mod
yes that switch will work perfectly for what you want, i've used that type before for that very purpose without problems.

yes it would be simple enough to add an led in parallel between the output from the board and the atomiser connector, you would need to add a resistor from one of the legs of the led to the board. a 120 Ohm one should be ok for this, but anything from 100-200 should not be too bad

something like this would do fine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-120-Ohm-0...1c11505974
